People often ask me how I developed an insatiable appetite for learning. The answer is curiosity. When designing a journey, I approach it with an open heart and mind. Here's my process.
History
When we learn the history of a destination, specifically its social, cultural and economic history, it gives us a peek into the locals’ way of life. It’s a gentle introduction to what you can expect when planning and curating experiences for your journey. This, for me, is the most important step.
Food & Drinks
Exploring local cuisine is a wonderful way to experience culture and local produce. Perhaps you’d be interested in a traditional Hāngi in New Zealand, cheese-making with Mongolian nomads or preparing jamu (a traditional Indonesian herbal medicine that’s often consumed as a tonic). If you’re a big foodie like me, make sure to broaden your research across multiple sources so you can develop a keen eye for authentic food places.
Specific Interest
One of the most authentic ways to meet and interact with a local is through a shared specific interest such as the love for food, golf, fishing, martial arts, and many more. I'd do my research and find out what the destination is widely known for. Perhaps you’d be interested in Karate training with masters in Okinawa, experiencing farm life in New Zealand or hiking with a naturalist in Bhutan.
Art, Films, Music, Books
Should time allow, I like to immerse myself in the works of local artists, writers and producers. They are intimate, soulful expressions of a place and its people. When I feel deep curiosity for something specific such as the legendary Waltz Ball in Vienna, I’ll make sure to time my journey around that season.
People
Speak to family and friends who have been there before, or better yet, a local. This is often a practical way to get firsthand insights into a place. As an advisor, I’m fortunate to be connected to travel trade partners around the world. They fuel my curiosity with inspiration and insider knowledge, and I carry these insights into the journeys I craft.
What destination are you most curious about now?
